How did I get here?

I decided to start this blog to share my experience with not only my loved ones who worry a great deal about me but everyone else who may be in a similar situation.
So I supose I should start with how I got Hep C. I was born 6 weeks early due to severe pre-eclampsia or dangerously high blood pressure on my mom. I had complications that required me to receive two blood transfusions and that's how all this started.
How did I get diagnosed?
In 2000 right after I got married I got sick with a UTI and my OB decided to run some routine tests before prescribing medication. My liver enzymes were apparently slightly elevated which led to follow up tests which led to a frantic cross Atlantic phone call from my mother regarding a nurse telling her that I had a "life threatening disease" but could not share any more information with her due to privacy laws. I was on my honeymoon when I got her call. Talk about spoiled honeymoon huh? So everything was a blur from that point until March 2001 when I started the initial Pegylated Interferon treatment. Forty eight weeks later I still had Hep C, except I had less hair and 3 migraines a week. Fun times. It was a year before I felt like myself again. It was enough to scare the crap out of me. I vowed to wait for the next wave of drugs. Well, almost 10 years later there's still nothing out there and my liver is getting worse so we decided it was best to try the Consensus Interferon to at least buy some time even if it didn't buy me freedom from the disease permanently. So here I am, about to inject myself for the first time with this poison dreading the moment but also knowing that it's my only real option right now.
